The Joseon dynasty was founded in 1392 by Yi Seong-gye. It lasted for about 500 years before it was replaced by the Korean Empire in 1897.
Many of the modern Korean cultures have continued since the Joseon Dynasty. It was the time when various cultures bloomed.
King Sejong the Great
Hangeul(Korean alphabet) is the only alphabet that knows who created it and when. Hangeul was created by King Sejong the Great, the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty.
Hanbok(traditional Korean dress) became popular around the world because it was worn by famous K-pop stars usually refers specifically to clothing worn during the Joseon dynasty period.
Also, the historical background of the drama “Dae Jang Geum” and “Kingdom” which have many fans all over the world, is the Joseon dynasty.
And the background music of the Korea Tourism Organization’s promotional video series is fusion Pansori(traditional Korean music genre). People of all social classes enjoyed Pansori in the late Joseon period. This series hit 80 million views in just 2 months on YouTube.
Ethical norms and values in daily life of the Korean people are based on Confucian that flourished during the Joseon Dynasty. For example, behaving respectfully and courteously to elders, being filial to parents, and placing importance on communities over individuals are based on Confucian ideas.
